Should we choose a collating tower or a digital sheet feeder?
Choose a collating tower for offset or digitally printed sections that must be gathered in sequence. A digital sheet feeder fits pre-collated sets, variable-page jobs, and production-press output. Some booklet-making lines support either feeding method.
What booklet capacity do we need for 140-page and 200-page work?
A 140-page booklet usually calls for a 35-sheet system, while a 200-page booklet calls for a 50-sheet system, based on 20 lb bond. Coated stocks and heavy covers increase thickness, so verify the machine's measured set-thickness limit.
Which booklet makers can produce letter-size landscape books?
Letter landscape booklets require long-sheet models. Morgana BM4000 and BM5000 systems accept sheets up to about 26 and 24.4 inches long, respectively. The Horizon iCE StitchLiner Mark IV accepts landscape sheets up to about 24 inches long.
How do we reduce toner cracking on digitally printed covers?
Score or crease covers before folding, especially with coated sheets, heavy cover stocks, and dry-toner output. The crease should compress the fold line without cutting the coating. Test printed samples because grain direction, toner coverage, and shop conditions affect the result.
When is three-side trimming worth the added equipment?
Three-side trimming removes the head, foot, and face in one pass. It suits full-bleed catalogs, manuals, and marketing books that need clean, square edges. A face trimmer corrects fore-edge creep but cannot remove variation at the head and foot.
Do we need square folding for saddle-stitched booklets?
Square folding makes sense for thicker books that need to stack flat, pack cleanly, or carry spine printing. A conventional folded spine is usually enough for shorter books. Test the option with your regular paper, cover stock, and thickest set.
What feeding controls should we specify for mixed or coated stocks?
Specify adjustable air separation, suction feeding, double-feed and misfeed detection, bin-empty monitoring, and job recall. Image or barcode verification may be necessary when regulated, transactional, or personalized work requires documented page sequence and set integrity.
What should a service review cover before installation?
